24 DECEMBER 1999

For the Xmas period I've uploaded Epic Adventures 1, 2 & 3, namely Castle Frankenstein, The Quest for the Holy Grail and Kingdom of Klein. The fourth adventure in the series was of course "The Wheel Of Fortune", one of the best text adventures on the beeb  :-)

  22 DECEMBER 1999

Added: QBix by Alligata.
N.B. This is another one that requires page to be set to &E00. So use ACP1770 E00 DFS under pcBBC, or just use the Archive Format version with BeebInC.

  21 DECEMBER 1999

Oops.

Added: Galilee by Shards.
Added: Gunfighter by Atlantis.
Added: Classic Adventure by Melbourne House.
N.B. These require page to be set at &E00. They'll run under pcBBC if you use the ACP1770 E00 DFS.

  6 DECEMBER 1999

N.B. The loader routine uses *MLOAD, so you might want to use the Watford 1.44 DFS rom in conjunction with an emulator, as MRUN/MLOAD commands are supported.

  5 DECEMBER 1999

Just received a nice surprise in the mail: Bryan McPhail, who is most renowned for his volumous input to the fantastic MAME arcade emulation project, has decided to write an Acorn Electron emulator! Now is that cool or what? Furthermore, on the homepage it says that the inspiration for the emu was none other than this very webpage, The Stairway To Hell! Well what can I say? I'm flattered! Good luck with the project, Bryan! [Btw, I'll be adding an Electron-only section in the new year].

Added: Savage Island Parts 1 & 2 by Adventure International.

Added: Mysterious Adventure 7: Feasibility Experiment by Digital Fantasia.

  1 DECEMBER 1999

Minor cosmetic changes to some pages. Old news shifted to What's Old. Cool flame animation replaced with fat bouncing person.

I've just received a bunch of disks through the post containing a load of BBC games (mostly adventures) that are lacking from the main archive at TBL. According to my calculations I've got just about enough to upload a new game a day for the month of December (well, up until Crimbo anyway) so we'll start off with Mysterious Adventure 5: Escape From Pulsar 7 by Digital Fantasia. I'll try my best to keep up with this schedule but if things do go pearshaped (i.e. some don't transfer across properly, some are transferred by other people, I fall behind/miss a few updates etc. etc.) don't get too annoyed ok!  >;-)

  3 OCTOBER 1999

Added:
Many Superior cover scans (Games)
Articles on Spy vs Spy and Quest (Articles)
Maps for Codename:Droid, Palace of Magic, Plan B, Ravenskull and Spellbinder (Articles)

Right. I'll take this opportunity to answer a FAQ. To run BBC games on PC you'll need a piece of software called an emulator. Neither a BBC Micro or a BBC 5.25" disk drive are required, as emulators run software that has previously been transferred across to PC files (known as 'disk images'). A full list of emulators for various platforms is available at The BBC Lives, but if you're using a PC I can save you a lot of time and recommend pcBBC.

The pcBBC emulator is fast, features smooth scrolling, has good sound and also boasts a near 100% compatability rate; altogether making it the best BBC emulator around at the mo'. The version available at the pcBBC homepage is only a demo, but as registration for the full version is just a tenner (UK residents) I'm sure you'll be impressed enough to make the purchase!

After downloading the demo you'll need the BBC system roms (available from this page) and an image of a DFS rom (this is a good one). I should however warn you that as I understand it, downloading the system roms is technically illegal unless you own the originals (i.e. you've still got your Beeb with OS 1.2 and BASIC 2 roms intact). Finally you'll need some software - check out The BBC Lives again, as Robert has several disk images available for download.

  19 SEPTEMBER 1999

Added scans for volume 4 of Micro User and some more Superior Software game adverts. Superior version of Chess added to downloads.

  5 SEPTEMBER 1999

A few more Superior rarities added to the downloads page (Gideon's Gamble, Lost City and Moon Mission). A second remix of the Firetrack loading theme has been added to the music page, contributed by Graham Bisset.

  29 AUGUST 1999

... on the web at last!

  22 AUGUST 1999

Added the instructions, hint sheet and box scan for Acornsoft's Quondam, all of which were contributed by Yateen Patel. Scanned/OCR'd the Micro User Playing Guide to Revs. More screenshots added to the Acornsoft page (btw, an asterisk indicates a 'rotating' screenshot!).

  15 AUGUST 1999

Added scans for volumes 2 and 3 of The Micro User and a whole load of game adverts. Link added to John Blythe's Chuckie Egg 99 project.

  8 AUGUST 1999

'Tidied up' the games pages. Added the first two articles in the long running Text Adventure series, ocr'd from the Micro User.

Thanks to those who've offered to scan in covers/instructions and take screenshots ... any such offers are most welcome!

  1 AUGUST 1999

Back again! 138 scans added to the games pages; I've put a few adverts up; there's some more tunes on the music page; cover scans of the first two volumes of Electron User and I've even ocr'd an 'article'!

Links page updated. Massive thanks to Trevor Lawford who has uploaded a page all about a game he wrote for Superior called Mutant Spiders, which most of you should have seen by now. Now if only other ex-beeb authors could do the same! (Well, I suppose Gary Partis has ... and Ian Bell ... and Ultimate ... anybody else?)

I'd like to thank those people who have emailed their support and those who have submitted 'missing' information. A lot of email went unanswered for a long period because I've been without internet access for the last couple of months, but hopefully I've cleared the backlog by now. I hadn't quite finished tidying up the games pages for this update but I've uploaded everything anyway as the site as it is has been lying untouched on my HD since mid-May!

  1 APRIL 1999

'Alpha' version of site launched.

On the games page, there's entries for about 150 titles. Only a couple have screenshots (Arcadians and Alien 8, I think) and I've added instructions and larger images for games on the 'P' page (Players/Postern stuff). Just one review at the moment: Joe Blade II, ocr'd from an old Micro User.

On the publications page, there's currently only scans for the first volume of the Micro User. There's a few tunes on the music page and a fairly rare game (Orlando's 3D Pool) is the sole occupant of the download page. The adverts and articles pages don't exist yet and everything else is heavily 'under construction'. So there we go. Enjoy.
